Mosaic: Getting Started

How to Make Your Mosaic

Our mosaic kits use natural stone and adhesive—no grout required. Follow the pattern as a guide, cutting and arranging the stones as needed to create your finished piece.

Before You Begin

A quick note on cutting stone

Tile cutting can create small, sharp fragments. Cut stones inside a folded towel or other enclosed space to contain debris, consider wearing safety glasses, and use a brush or damp cloth—not your hands—to clear fragments. Tile cutting should be done by adults.

Step 1 — Plan Your Layout

Arrange before you glue.

Set up on a protected work surface and begin arranging your stones over the printed pattern. You can plan the entire design first or work one section at a time.

The pattern is a guide. Natural stone varies in size and shape, so adjust the arrangement as you go.

Step 2 — Cut to Fit

Use the tile nipper to shape stones where needed.

Place the stone between the blades where you want it to break. Loosely wrap the nipper and stone in a towel to contain fragments, then squeeze the handles firmly.

Filling a small space? Cut a few options at once rather than repeatedly trimming the same piece.

Step 3 — Glue Your Stones

A little glue goes a long way.

Apply a small dab of WeldBond to the back of each stone and press it firmly onto the panel. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth as you work.

Step 4 — Keep Going

Keep it close

Keep stones close together and aim for relatively consistent spacing.

Adapt as you go

Use the printed pattern as a guide rather than worrying about matching it exactly.

Look at the whole

Step back occasionally and assess the overall composition before filling the next area.

Step 5 — Let It Dry

Give it the night.

Let your finished mosaic dry overnight before moving or hanging it. WeldBond dries clear. Your mosaic is designed for indoor display. Add hanging hardware if you'd like to hang it, or simply display it on a shelf.
