How to Make Your Mobile
Paint, arrange, and connect the wooden shapes to create your own mobile. Follow the design on the box or experiment with the arrangement to make it your own.
Step 1 — Plan Your Layout
Play with the arrangement.
Before you paint, lay out your wooden shapes and try a few different configurations.
Shapes with three holes are especially useful for building width and creating balance. There’s no single right arrangement—move things around until it feels good.
Step 2 — Paint Your Pieces
A few thin coats work best.
Apply 2–3 thin coats of paint, letting each layer dry completely before adding the next.
Keep a cup of water and paper towel nearby to rinse and blot your brush between colors.
Step 3 — Assemble Your Mobile
Build it from the top down.
Start at the top and assemble your mobile one tier at a time, checking the balance as you go. This will help you determine how long each piece of brass wire should be before you cut it.
Cut each piece of brass wire about 1 inch longer than the finished length you want. Thread the wire through the hole, then twist the extra length around the hanging wire with your fingers, tweezers, or small craft pliers to secure.
Continue working downward, adjusting the spacing and balance with each new tier.
Step 4 — Hang It Up
Find its place.
Thread the clear wire through the top hole of your mobile and form a loop for hanging.
Hang it from the ceiling for gentle movement, or display it flat against a wall.
